Interview with labor activist, writer and former Teamster Joe Allen, author of The Package King: A Rank and File History of United Parcel Service , about the current elections for national leadership of the Teamsters union.  The 2016 Teamster elections could significantly impact not only the direction of the Teamsters themselves, but the entire U.S. labor movement.  As Joe explains at a time in which the organization of labor in the logistics sector is vital to advances for the U.S. working...

This is the full 3-6-2016 episode of the Labor Express Radio program. On tonight’s episode of Labor Express Radio, we turn to an issue I have been anxious to address on Labor Express for some time.  The on-going crisis in Flint michigan in which thousands of residents have been poisoned with lead from contaminated water is one of the most striking and historic examples of environmental injustice.  It is a condemnation of the emergency manager system in Michigan, the current manifestation of...

This is the full 11-20-2016 episode of the Labor Express Radio program. On tonight’s episode of Labor Express we take a look at the presidential election and ask what happened, why and what can we expect in regards to the impact on working people in the next 4 years.  While much of the mainstream press is rightly lamenting the level of racism, sexism and xenophobia in this country that was revealed by Trump’s victory, few media outlets have focused on a class perspective and analysis of...

This is the full 1-24-2016 episode of the Labor Express Radio program. In the last few weeks fear in the undocumented immigrant community in the U.S. has reached new heights, as ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) the agency known for many years as the INS, has launched a new series of immigration raids around the country, landing dozens of young single mothers and their children in deportation proceedings.  These new raids are targeting recent Central Americans immigrants whose asylum...

This is the full 1-10-2016 episode of the Labor Express Radio program. Happy 2016 to all our listeners.  I thought I would try to kick the new year off with some hopeful news and perhaps a preview of what is likely to come in 2016. First we have news of a sadly rare event in labor news, a successful NLRB union election.  Dock workers at a Sears location in Chicago Ridge voted to become members of UFCW Local 881 in late November and are now negotiating over their first contract. 2016 is of...

On tonight’s episode of Labor Express Radio, as the Summer comes to an end and thousands of students and teachers ready themselves for a return to the classroom in the coming weeks, the likelihood of a teachers strike seems increasingly likely.  The Chicago teachers union or CTU house of delegates is set to meet on September 7th to discuss this possibility.  A day after students return to school.  But a strike will not...

This is the full 10-30-2016 episode of the Labor Express Radio program. Since our last program aired two weeks ago, two strikes have been averted, and another launched.  On our last program we discussed that the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) was reviewing the final contract offer made by the Chicago Board of Education in precisely the 11th hour, the night before a strike was set to start.  The Union’s House of Delegates, which includes hundreds of representatives from the over 600 schools in...

This is the full 2-7-2016 episode of the Labor Express Radio program. Struggles around public education continue to dominate the labor news scene in Chicago, and on tonight’s program we’ll hear about several developments in this area. First, on Monday the Chicago Teachers Union rejected the latest contract offer from the Chicago Board of Education.  Making the possibility of a strike very likely.  The contract offer from the board which demands serious concessions from the teachers comes...

This is the full 3-20-2016 episode of the Labor Express Radio program. April is looking to be an exciting month for the labor movement in Chicago.  The month will kick off with a series of public actions and perhaps a one day strike on April 1st, lead by the Chicago Teachers Union and over a dozen other local unions against both the Chicago Board of Education and Governor Bruce Rauner’s attacks on public education and the public sector more broadly.  The actions planned for that day are...

This is the full 5-1-2016 episode of the Labor Express Radio program. Happy May Day to all our listeners!  It is exciting to be able to air an episode of Labor Express Radio on International Workers Day!  Unfortunately, one of the drawbacks of doing so is that it limits my ability to report to you all on the events of May Day this year.  I have just returned from the May Day march and do not have time to prepare audio from today’s events, that will unfortunately have to wait until the next...
